I will be exploring how The Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Arts and Crafts movement at large created the Organic Design style. Organic Design incorporates natural materials such as wood, straw, and stone and embraces soft shapes. This contrasts the modernism of the time period. Then, I will explain how the Museum of Modern Art’s 1941 exhibition “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” popularized this style through analysis of multimedia including press releases and black and white photographs.
