Anxiety is something everybody suffers from to some degree at some point in their lives. However, for some people, anxiety is a beast that is an exhausting, everyday battle to struggle against and affects every aspect of a person’s life. It is also important to note that some of those that are struggling with this condition are a group one would not necessarily expect- young children.

My thesis will take the form of an illustrated children’s book that tells the story of Nellie, a young elephant who suffers from Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). The story will follow Nellie as she learns to cope with her condition and find support amongst her family and peers. This story and its visuals serve to be understandable for elementary-age children in a gentle but relatable manner. The book’s themes will include anxiety, loneliness, self-worth and self-love, and finding support. The purpose of this book is to bring about awareness to the very young people who suffer from anxiety and uplift them with a story that reminds them that they are supported and do not struggle alone.
